The short version

Buddy is an English-speaking coach that runs entirely on your phone. Your conversations with Buddy, your speech recordings, and everything it remembers about your progress are processed and stored only on your device. They are never uploaded to us, and they are gone the moment you uninstall the app.

The only information we hold on our own servers is what you give us to create an account: your name, email, and the few details below.

What we collect, and why

  • Name, email, phone (optional), education level. Collected when you register, to create and identify your account.
  • Date of birth. Used only to determine whether you are under 13, which changes how registration works (see below). We do not use it for anything else.
  • School/coaching-centre enrollment code. Required only if you are under 13 (see below). Links your account to the institution that issued the code.
  • Anonymous usage events. The app records events like which practice mode you opened, tagged only with a random, per-install ID that is never linked to your name or email once your account is deleted. No conversation content, no speech, and no personally identifying information is included.
  • Weekly leaderboard. If you opt in, a self-chosen nickname and a points total are shown on a global leaderboard, keyed to the same anonymous install ID. Your real name and email are never shown.

Buddy is built for learners aged 7 and up

Because Buddy's audience includes children, we do not let children under 13 create an account directly. Anyone registering with a date of birth under 13 years old must enter a valid enrollment code from their school or coaching centre before sign-in can even begin. This means a child's account is always created with an institution's involvement, not by the app collecting a child's details on its own. Learners aged 13 and over can register directly, the same way as on any other app.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We use Supabase to host our database and handle sign-in, and Vercel to host this website - both act only as infrastructure providers under their own data-processing agreements, and do not use your data for their own purposes.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account and all the data described above at any time:

  • In the app: Profile → Delete my account. This is instant.
  • On the web:if you've already uninstalled the app, use the account deletion page. Web requests are reviewed and processed within a few business days.

Deleting your account removes your name, email, phone, date of birth, and institution link from our servers, and removes your entry from the leaderboard. Your on-device conversation history is controlled entirely by you and is removed by uninstalling the app.

Data retention

We keep account data for as long as your account exists. Anonymous usage events (tagged only with a random install ID, not your identity) may persist after account deletion, in the same de-identified form described above.
